Solo
I was not able to convince any of my usual training partners to run canyons with me today, so I decided to play it safe on the standard on Granite Bay Trails. When I started I was not sure how long or far I would go, just wanted to be outside running. Once again I was reminded how beautiful the trails are at this time of year, the ground is damp, the temps are cool and I seem to be the only person out there. Running alone is actually a really nice treat. I had good music on the ipod, ran at my own pace, and thoroughly enjoyed the fact that I am running just to simply run. Three and half hours of solitude, running and thinking, good Sunday.

Perfect Morning
I decided to run on a trail that I run frequently, especially in the early spring months training for AR50. One of the best things about trail running is how different the same trail is on any given day, Wednesday was the perfect reminder of just how beautiful and peaceful a trail can be. It had rained the night before, it was the perfect amount of rain to “repair” the trail, awaken the fall scents, and make for an overall joyous run. I was fortunate enough to have two hours to spend running. In that two hours I was treated to amazing views of the sun peaking between clouds, the lake and the snow capped Sierra’s in the background.

Western States 2010 #1
I’ll call this the first of many entries to come regarding Western States. After a fantastic race last year I am fortunate enough to be one of the “invitees” to race in 2010. I received my invitation to officially register and pay on Saturday night, I did. I have to say that I LOVE that race. When the gun went off last June, I had 0 performance expectaions, my only goal was to finish in an upright position. By some miracle I managed a sub-24 hour, eighth place finish, so now I get to do it all over again. Luckily my husband and children are super supportive and allow to me to be out on the trails as often as needed in order to train. So, here we go again!!!

Falling Hurts
After falling on the trail yesterday, I woke-up this morning feeling like I have been hit by a truck. It is a bummer, especially since I am typically over cautious on the downhills. I am debating whether to swallow some ibuprofen and attempt a one hour run or if it is better to just take it easy at the gym. The knee that took the impact with the rock is pretty puffy and kind of ugly, the rest of body just hurts. The rational part of my brain says to just take a day off, this is my off-season, better to rest and heal now rather than cause further damage that will take more time to heal down the road. Then there is ultra-runner thinking that says just keep running and it will eventually get better.

Autum Day
A beautiful 2 hour run from folsom to Granite Bay yesterday afternoon. The sun was low in the sky, the trees were beautiful shades of yellow and orange. It was hard to limit the run to two hours. Today, the Clementine Loop from Auburn provided beautiful scenery, cool temps and good company. I had a solid crash and unfortunately came down pretty hard on my knee, hopefully the swelling will have subsided enough to run tomorrow.

Sierra Snow
Enough snow fell in the Sierra’s the other day that I have had to alter my running plans. We were hoping to run from Squaw Valley to Robinson Flat, but it looks like the window for that may have finally closed. Although I am excited to have the snow and get to start the ski season, it is a little bittersweet. My favorite running this year has been in the Desolation Wilderness Area and I will miss those trails. Looks like I will be running closer to Auburn and Folsom for now, and maybe a little resting…
